Also depends on how quickly you want stuff to escalate actually The introduction of glass for example is a logical first thing to do in that region. People know it's potential for growing crops, so the MC wouldn't have to bother convincing anyone of it's use. It's also the kind of thing that isn't weird for a small child to stumble upon, and really isn't hard to make. Problem is that you're basically saying goodbye to any slow progression immediatly. Everyone up North will know who, when and where.
