“Ugh, what a mess!” Morganna declared.
Teddy was abruptly woken up by her voice. Morning light was shining through the gaps in his window curtain, but it was obviously not even seven o'clock. Summer meant the days were long and the sun rose early.
Teddy partially sat up, trying to get his bearings. Morganna was standing in the middle of his room, wearing a dark blue silk bathrobe that she had cinched shut at the waist. “I can’t wear those,” Teddy explained. “They’re girl clothes.”
Morganna sighed and rolled her eyes. “Oh come on, Teddy. There’s only us out here at the house. You can wear some of Vivianne’s old clothes for a few days until I buy you some new clothes that fit you better.”
Morganna went to Teddy’s dresser and pulled open the top drawer. “You didn’t even fold anything!” Morganna said. “We’ll deal with this later. You can’t just hide a mess. You have to actually address it. This behaviour is similar to how your father hid the mess of his finances and real problems from me, rather than fixing his ‘mistakes’. Unless you’re being sneaky, like him, and cutting corners.”
“No, I just wanted to clean up quick,” Teddy explained.
“Well, you’re going to need to fold and organize your things better from now on,” Morganna said. “I won’t have you just shoving things out of sight and calling it cleaning. Not under my roof. Here, put this on.”
Morganna tossed a purple pair of sweat-shorts at Teddy, with a flick of her wrist. Teddy caught the shorts as they softly impacted his chest. He held the cotton material and looked at it. It wasn’t pink, but the shorts were definitely cut higher than he would have liked.
“Come on, I haven’t got all day,” Morganna said.

Morganna shrugged and put it back in the drawer. “Fine. It’s one of the things in here that would have actually kind of fit you. It’s not like Vivianne had boobs or anything when she wore that. You’re lucky she still had it. Here, what about this?”
Morganna pulled out a white t-shirt with a pink sports brand logo embossed on the chest. Teddy hesitated. At least it was a more normal t-shirt. He slowly nodded and took the shirt from Morganna.
“There, good enough,” Morganna said. “Off you go, downstairs. There’s some toast for you on the counter and a list of chores.” She clapped twice and gestured, shooing Teddy out of his bedroom and down the hall.
The rest of the morning was spent under Morganna’s constant tutelage and observation. It was clear that she was not going to give Teddy any chance to run off or hide. Teddy ate a couple slices of toast with marmalade. He asked for coffee but was given orange-juice instead, and then was handed a long list of chores. “You want me to do all this today?!” Teddy asked, staring at the list with incredulous frustration.
“Of course not, boy,” Morganna said. “You’ll do just the items I put a number beside. Tomorrow I will update the list and give you new tasks. If you get through any of these chores, you can begin to tackle the other items with less immediate priority.”
“But the first item says I have to clean the bathroom, top to bottom,” Teddy protested. He felt disgusted at the mere idea. He’d never cleaned a bathroom in his life. “That will take hours!”
“Precisely why I really didn’t need you dilly-dallying in your bedroom all morning,” Morganna said.
“I don’t want to do this,” Teddy complained. “It’s not fair. This is supposed to be my summer off.”
Morganna’s eyebrows rose as she looked down at Teddy. “We already discussed this last night,” she said. “I’m not paying your college tuition in the fall. Your enrolment has already been suspended. This isn’t a summer ‘off’. This is just summertime. You need to pull your weight around here before we talk about a return to the luxury you enjoyed before. Your father is literally headed for prison. You need to accept some new priorities. The best first step is by doing some simple household chores.”
“But…maybe I can get a job, like Vivianne and Nimue,” he offered.
Morganna shook her head, looking increasingly annoyed. “We’ve been over this. You yourself told me the house was too far out of town,” she said. “You don’t even have access to a car. You need some structure and discipline in your life, and I am providing it. Someone has to be a good authority figure in your life. “And the rest of the list?” Morganna inquired.

Morganna walked away, leaving Teddy to put away the cleaning supplies. For the first time since leaving his room that morning, he was free from her constant supervision. Teddy slammed the brush into the bucket, taking his anger out on it. He put all the cleaning items back under the sink, actually taking care not to make anything messy again.
