He walked slow behind the mower looking at her slim legs work. The way she moved, even just washing a window, you could tell she’d been a dancer.
She was wearing a pale blue tank top with spaghetti straps and shorts, her silky hair up in a twist. Her legs were graceful, muscular, and they worked an inadvertent sort of Pas De Bourree while she cleaned.
What was she thinking right now? Was she thinking about the streaks she might be leaving, maybe Petey’s little league in an hour… Or was it darker, dirtier? Was she thinking of all the things Tyler did to her—things that were so great she had to have them, even running around behind Pete’s back and shunting the kids’ schedules around? What goes on in her head? How well can you really know someone?
Pete had given her his trust. He’d given her his darkest fears and secrets. The keys to his psyche. He’d really only known her for nine years. In the grand scheme of things how long was that really? People divorced all the time. She could go and tell all the people she knew that Pete had a little dick, and he had fantasies about seeing his wife with better men. Petey was pushing his little brother on the swing at the play-set, dressed and ready to go in his little league outfit. Thursday night, more nice weather, but the days were getting shorter. The sky above their well-kept house still bright but getting that deep haze as the sun started to descend. He’d give her what she wanted. He couldn’t wait for her to get it. He moved to the back of the shed where she couldn’t see him and he sat down on a squat barrel of fertilizer. He wanted to watch her again. He wanted to witness her ecstasy. He ran his hands through his hair, cradled his head, rested his elbows on his knees. “Sorry, mom, I wanted to catch you before you got outside.”
“That’s fine, Petey. Are you going to Noah’s or are you coming home with me?”
“Noah’s mom’s here, I’m going with her…”
“Okay, Petey, but remember we’ve got dinner with your cousins tonight, so don’t be too late. You need to get cleaned up and changed before we go over. I need you home by five.”
He pulled away from her, pretty sure his mom might give him a kiss anyway, he said, “Okay, bye, mom,” and trotted back up the hallway. She watched him disappear into the other students. He was getting so big, so grown up. She hated it.
Jess turned and got in the flow of kids, hustled herself out to the parking and into her minivan. She threw her bag into the backseat and headed out into the throng of cars and buses. She needed cocoa and brown sugar to make her chocolate party cake for Pete’s brother’s memorial tonight. Pete and Patty held the memorial to honour their brother, not on the day of his death but on his birthday, celebrating all the happy parties they had when they were kids. Pete and Jess and the boys would go to Patty and Russ’ tonight and Jess would bring the dessert. It was always a good get-together, not usually sad, it was just a way to make sure they never forgot Michael.
Pete never really talked to her about Michael. Which was strange since she knew he suffered over it at times. One night when they were dating, just beginning to get to know each other, he’d told her when it came up in a natural conversation about siblings. He was matter of fact and the story was very sad, but he had seemed like he’d come to terms with it a long time ago. And he’d never talked about it since, never told her any details about his illness or fun stories about him when he was well. He would reference him occasionally and they had this wonderful memorial once a year, but he never discussed with her his feelings, his emotions on the loss. Sometimes she thought her Sweet-Pete kept things way too bottled up. She sometimes worried that there was a lot more pain in there that she didn’t know about, that even Pete didn’t realize.
Coming out of school and then turning out to the main road she got stuck in traffic, dwarfed in an armada of school buses. There were kids on her left trying to get her attention, waving their small hands in wide swaths. She smiled for them and waved back while they all waited for the light to change. She saw Kevin Campbell there, shy, behind Florencia Torres who drew her little finger across the glass in the shape of a heart. Fitting, she was going to be a real heart breaker in a few years. Jess drew a heart for her as well then waved to them all as their bus pulled ahead a few lengths.
Pete was right. Everything he said that day he’d found her with Tyler was right. She actually couldn’t be more sorry about that whole afternoon. Petey could have come home early, been a witness to something he wouldn’t ever understand.
She’d sworn off Tyler. She had to. Fifteen days now without him. She’d seen him out and about, around the school, but she’d had no contact with him. She absolutely ached for him.
She knew she would fuck him again. She knew Pete would want to sit and watch them together again. No date had been set, they’d just been too busy. She was hoping for this weekend, or maybe even a day during the week. God, that could be horrible though. Jess laughed and stepped around him and she tried to help the older man pull the cart free but it was really stuck. The younger guy helped out now, seeing someone else's simple kindness, and he pulled a rock out of the cart’s wheel well that had been stopping it. Jess thanked him and touched his arm and she could tell he felt better about his day now. She picked up a basket, then turned, put it back down and took a cart for herself. She might as well grab some more items while she was here. Maybe put off a big shopping for a few more days.
There had been that one and only time after school that she and Tyler had got together, made love after work. She fibbed to Pete, and she was delighted that the opportunity had fallen in her lap. She hadn’t planned on fabricating other times, lying to Pete and telling him that they’d done it before, but she couldn’t help it. Pete looked so weak on the stairs. So vulnerable. Brown sugar was on sale so she grabbed a second bag. She found the cocoa and then got some more milk and cereal for the boys, some toiletries for Pete. SPOILER: I ended up reading the rest of this story on kindle once I figured out it the whole thing was available. I’m realizing that I might not be the target audience for your writing KT. I was STRESSED out the entire time over how Jessy and Pete would end up back together. I was almost sure they would but then I remembered I about threw my phone through the wall when I finished the Maggie story and found out how sad of ending that story had for Max…. But anyways I was stressed but convinced everything would work out, and it did but! I was just so dissatisfied with Pete and Jess’s ending. She don’t own up to anything to Pete. I’m guessing by the tears and shaking on her door step she’s happy to have him back but I don’t think she ever REALLY felt like she lost him and so many things were said (Tyler told Pete about how Jesse was going to dump him, and then she does and then the only reason they don’t work out is because Pete rips them apart in the end) Jesse is by far my least favorite wife in your universe now beating Maggie and I forget her name from the separate schools series (which I really hope is still in the plans to finish) anyways I was dissatisfied because we never see Jesse own up to the shit she pulled in all of this. She was NOT solely at fault for everything that happened but she was evil and conniving and selfish and just mean to Pete plenty of times and I knew he would take her back but he never grew a fully functioning spine and didn’t put her in a position to have to own up to her parts in all of this and worse that Jesse never owned up to her shit on her own. I loved the book Learning Lessons, it was a great read and had me HOOKED. But I was extremely dissatisfied by the ending. Sorry KT still a huge fan of yours.

It could be said that OW's 'soul' was not broken by the harshness of the Victorian penal system but his health underwent a fearsomely brutal drubbing that a time traveling insurance actuary might have assessed for shortening and severely reducing the quality of his untimely declining years.
