I hope they can work things out. They still love each other. If the baby turns out to be Josh’s, I see that as something that would bring them together, as long as Kimmy doesn’t do something to wreck it. She’s her own worst enemy, but I do feel very sad for her.

Bill F Protagoras

Coming from the no where and going to the no place...

Bill F Protagoras

All good things come to the same ineluctable end as bad things.

Bill F Protagoras

"Her love came barbed with hurt." Of course, the head of an arrow is barbed to prevent it from being pulled out, without incurring further 'self-inflicted' harm...

Bill F Protagoras

"But everything I did ended up destroying who you are.” It is possibly true... which could ravage them both short term. This Josh is a new alien Mardi Gras disguise which he could find himself inhabiting like a suit from Devlin's tailor... persona non grata in his own body. With a wife beleaguered by missteps and hobbled by incertitude and probability.

Yeah, I said dark, but not that dark. My thought was she was trying to get out of there as quickly as possible to avoid having Josh convince her to stay. I assume she'll be like Josh and get a hotel for the night, then come back for clothes during the day when Josh is at work. But just my guess. As to where she's staying long term, most likely option to me might be her father maybe? I don't think he's in any way tied up in getting something she bought with the stolen money, and she can probably be vague enough where he wouldn't ask too many questions. Her sister and their relationship may be a reason she wouldn't though. I don't think she's immediately going to jail or anything, that would probably take time. And like I said, we don't exactly know what she learned after speaking with Berg, other than it seems to have convinced her bad things are afoot. But "bad" doesn't necessarily mean "jail" IMO.

Chris K

I sure hope not. I still think they can work it out, but there are still many hurdles in the way.

Kat

Yes, I also thought that, too, but didn’t want to say it. That would be a horribly sad way to end this story. I don’t think she’d do that if only for the baby growing inside her. She wants to have this baby, regardless of its paternity.

Chris K

Or steps into a lake...

Kat

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if she’s going to a lawyer’s office to turn herself in? She doesn’t need any of her stuff if she’s going to jail.

Donkatsu

Part of Kimmy’s reticence in telling Josh anything may be her lawyer self coming out to protect Josh from legal liability. If he can convincingly say he knows nothing of the embezzlement and use of the funds he will probably be entirely off the hook, even if he benefitted from some of the stolen monies (the suit).

Chris K

A little concerning Kimmy took nothing with her. No clothes or anything.

Andrew Mellein

Great chapter KT. Feels like we are in the final stretch.

Kat

Prolonged darkness is a good way of putting it.

Tough read, but I figured this chapter was going to be painful coming into it. Since we did not see her conversation with the lawyer, I'm not 100% sure her story that she "quit" is totally accurate. I do think she's being honest with him that she's done with Devlin, and that she's not going to stay with Hyun (remember she mentioned she wanted to protect Hyun as well from this). Maybe she's going to stay with her father? I guess we'll see, and we'll see exactly what trouble she's in. Much like she "burned the bridge" with Devin and Stone Brokerage, I think she's trying here to "burn the bridge" with Josh, for his own sake. She wants him to write her off and not look into what she's talking about. We'll see if he does that or not. Think it gets messy from here...Devlin isn't going away, especially after he hears she quit and about the money stolen. How does she respond when he confronts her? And what does Josh do next? We'll see if we get a "happy" ending or not, but think we're going to be in prolonged darkness until the end now.

Bill F Protagoras

"We do right. We don't do nice." Esme Weatherwax.

Bill F Protagoras

Witches burn...

Bill F Protagoras

“To be whole is to be part; true voyage is return.” Ditto... I live in hopes.

Bill F Protagoras

"from the standpoint of years of intimacy and years of longing. He saw her as she was." Ditto.

Bill F Protagoras

Josh is not strong, unless a mess is strong.

Bill F Protagoras

"It is our suffering that brings us together. It is not love. Love does not obey the mind, and turns to hate when forced." "We know that there is no help for us but from one another, that no hand will save us if we do not reach out our hand. And the hand that you reach out is empty, as mine is." "All you have is what you are, and what you give.” "I am the Beggarman..." The Dispossessed.

Kat

Such a painful read, but so good. I’m assuming that Kimmy is referring to her legal troubles when she says she wants “to burn all by myself.” She must be in a lot of trouble, because why else wouldn’t she tell Josh? That’s the infuriating part. I want to yell at her to tell him the whole truth. Why can’t she see that her first mistake was hiding stuff from Josh? Then all the lies that she told, all the gaslighting and cheating has gotten her to this point of destruction in her life? At this point, she really has nothing to lose by being honest. She’s leaving anyway. Where is she going? I would be shocked if she doesn’t end up at Hyun’s having sex with her in her bed. That would leave me very disappointed in her, and in Hyun. She still seems certain that Josh is the father of her baby. I wonder why she’s so confident. Did she have a paternity test done, or she just “faking it until she makes it,” true? Kimmy’s call with Aaron Berg must have been pretty bad. She didn’t quit the brokerage today. She was essentially fired, and is probably going to be charged with a crime. Josh will find out about this. I’m sure Devlin will fill him in on all the dirty details. Kimmy has to know this. I feel heartbroken for the both of them. I was so excited to see a new chapter, but now I’m bummed again. Lol It just goes to show the strength of KT’s writing that I care about these people. It was a long shot, but I wanted them to find their way back to each other, Josh stronger and Kimmy humbled. However this story ends, I’ll be sad to see it over. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and KT, no one writes with such emotion like you do. It’s a testament to your skills that I’m so bummed right now. 🙂

eep! Bill posted three of them that I fixed already. I didn't put this chapter through my editing software.

Bill F Protagoras

Speechless...as I so clearly ought to be... Nicely, the predicament enfolded in the penultimate paragraph... then an unequivocal sentence underlining all of Josh's previous misapprehensions. Kimmy's photographer Dad earning the chops of his parallel grief. Josh confused in beggarly self exile like Shevek in LeGuin's "The Dispossessed."

Pete

Editing feedback for KT: I did notice 3 typoes (word omissions/misspellings).

Pete

I really love the writing in this chapter. First, just the twist of Kimmy leaving. Then the "game spinner"...his mind reeling through his retort options. And that game spinner is in a way then an intra-chapter foreshadowing (of sorts) of how his reactions then proceed to spin the dial from shaming, to begging, to insulting, to demanding; his words mirroring his emotional state as it in turn oscillates from incredulity, to rage, to humiliation, to terror, sadness, and desperation. Great stuff!

Bill F Protagoras

"and this tie he didn’t stop her." Not tie but time?

Bill F Protagoras

"Why do have to hurt me?" Is 'you' the missing word?

KT Morrison

thank you!

Bill F Protagoras

"I don’t where I’ll stay." Is 'know' the missing word?
