It makes every part of the production process easier down the line - the artist can include numbered balloons in their layout so everyone can see that there's enough room for the text and that it flows properly. If I ask anyone (especially the letterer) for changes, I can call things out specifically by the number ("We're going to put a new line between 7 + 8" or "Let's remove 4. It doesn't work as well as I thought it would.")

Hey Jim, what’s the significance to numbering your dialogue? Is this helpful just for layout purposes? Have artists or lettered mention that it’s helpful?
