LIFE DRAWINGS FROM PHOTOREFERENCE #183: Another stab at Sean Connery as 007!

So!A recent Distressed Damsels post (for the $5+ tiers) featured a commission request for SF heroines Rose & Lily bedamseled by the Sean Connery iteration of James Bond. Alas, I couldn't quite pull off the Connery resemblance in the final piece, so I thought I'd try again with an especially striking and well-lit Bond photo I'd saved to my ref folder:Wellp, I captured the lighting well enough (which was the more important element from ...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: Enjoy the WORK STAGES chronicling my descent into commissioned crossover madness (part 2)!

[Part 1 of this post can be seen here.]The piece that follows isn't technically a commission per se, but rather a gift illo for a friend of time and long-time (small-P) patron. He wanted a sketch of Dirty Pair's Kei and Yu—nay, Rose & Lily in a distressed-damsel crossover with a specific iteration of a familiar character from a very different franchise; though you might not be able to spot the resemblance, the character in question was ...

WORK STAGES on a semi-recent comic, pt. 4!

[Our previous post in this series can be seen here.]In a desperate bid for a recurring feature to fill up M/W/F slots on this here Patreon, here are (most of) the Work Stages on pages 7 & 8 of a 10-page story I wrote and drew as a backup feature for a 2016 Deadpool Annual. (Note: For some unknown reason, I don't have a jpeg of the colors for p.07 on hand.)Given the opportunity, I decided to mix in the nigh-invulnerable mecha Gothic Lolita fro...

He wanted a sketch of Dirty Pair's Kei and Yu—nay, Rose & Lily in a distressed-damsel crossover with a specific iteration of a familiar character from a very different franchise. As one might expect I knocked out the figures of Rose & Lily easy-peasy, but soon ran into trouble with the suit-clad mal...

PSM Endpage comic re: RE4 losing out on 2005 Game of the Year!

I thought this comic I wrote and drew for the videogame magazine PSM's Endpage feature from December 2005 was at least semi-relevant currently due to the recent release of the Resident Evil 4 remake.Anyhoo, this feature depicted the cast from RE4 bitterly complaining about losing out on PSM's 2005 Game of the Year award to God of War, or so I'm assuming based on Leon's reference to Kratos.Gotta admit, they have a point, as IMHO Re...

LIFE DRAWINGS FROM PHOTOREFERENCE #182: More of 2019's early Procreate sketch sets!

From the 2019 era of experimentation in the iPad art app Procreate, here are a pair of (mostly) photoreference-based sketch sets from early on in my digital explorations. At this point I was still using Procreate's admittedly "mushy-looking" Medium Airbrush to get something onto the g-d tablet:That main figure appears to be a Ninjette variant based on the poster from the then-recent Battle Angel Alita movie; that head at upper right i...

VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: S'more commissions circa 2000's DIRTY PAIR: RUN FROM THE FUTURE miniseries!

Behold, more Vintage Con Sketches drawn not long after the final Dirty Pair miniseries, Run from the Future, which ran from (late) 1999 to 2000. Scanned these from a rapidly dwindling binder of photocopies of the originals, hence the slightly "off" repro quality.First off, a single-figure Y*ri sketch, drawn with a random new redesign of character and costume:At the time, I was doing so many g-d DP sketches that I kept on cranking out rand...

WORK STAGES on hybrid analog/digital test illo from THE CHASTE AND THE CHAINED!

So!The image gallery above features the Work Stages on a test illo I've been working on for potential workflow on fantasy project The Chaste and the Chained. Several different creative approaches issues were being tried out with this piece, as you'll see.First off, I was trying out a "new-to-me" pencil lead, to see if it could replace my dwindling supply of long-ago-discontinued 5B Prismacolor Turquoise leads, which are the only t...

DISTRESSED DAMSEL: S'more semi-recent sketch sets of alt superheroine EMERALD!

Behold! Another few sketch sets—mostly drawn as pencil tests for a new-to-me lead—feature a new appearance by a maskless superheroine originally created for a bunch of DiD rough-sketch commissions well before Empowered came about. This character, who I've unofficially nicknamed "Emerald" as a supranym after I drew her in a green proto-Empsuit for a color piece, was one of the early forerunners to Emp, along with "Dirty Pair: A ...

WORK STAGES on yet another recent comic page!

Wellp, as Harley Quinn #29 hits the shelves of your Local Comics Store (or wherever else) today whilst featuring the 8-page HQ backup story I wrote and drew for the issue, thought I'd trot out a Work Stages post with a new-to-you (I think) page from late in the narrative. Not much to say—nor much time to say it—about these stages, other than to say that the colors were done by Alejandro Sanchez, who also colored that "Barbarienne Harle...

(NOT) FAILED-PROJECT (AND NOT ON) FRIDAY: An actually successful comics proposal, part 2!

Wellp, just found out that I can't post the time-lapse Life Drawing video I intended to put up today, as Patreon wants a URL or link for video content, as opposed to the Procreate MP4 on my hard drive. So, I'm hastily swapping in part 2 of my original pitch for the 2004 miniseries Livewires, following up from a recent post.In an unusual break from the usual format of Failed-Project Friday, this time I'm going to feature a comic pitch t...

LIFE DRAWINGS FROM PHOTOREFERENCE #181: A 2019 Procreate sketch set featuring ol' Hopper!

From the 2019 era of digital experimentation in the iPad art app Procreate, here's a set of sketches based on ol' Jim Hopper from season 2 (I think?) of Stranger Things. Note that I was playing around with some different, charcoal-ish brushes on the left-side close-ups:...while the right-side sketches were down with the "Medium Hard Airbrush" tool, my preferred brush for loose(r) sketches in Procreate, despite the mushy and obviou...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: Yet more EMPOWERED pose-ref sketch sets of yore!

Following up on a Distressed Damsels post from a month or so ago, I just scanned a few more Empowered rough sketch sets recently discovered in an old folder, probably drawn to generate poses for future comic stories... maybe. Those lines wrapped around Emp suggest the nature of the unseen foes distressing her, which becomes a tad clearer in the next set:Yeahp, those wee, vaguely sketched figures around Emp suggest that she's been captured by t...

LIFE DRAWINGS FROM PHOTOREFERENCE #180: A brand-new Clip Studio Paint sketch set, hot off the iPad!

In an attempt to mix things up with the new(-ish) era of digital-art Life Drawing posts, here's a brand new sketch set drawn in Clip Studio Paint (iOS version) from random photoreference, as opposed to the 2019 artwork seen in our previous installment. Yay?Experienced a spot of difficulty whilst working on this piece, as my (mostly) beloved Design Pencil brush seemed to not work as well as I would've hoped. The mystery was solved once I t...

(NOT) FAILED-PROJECT FRIDAY: An actually successful comics proposal, part 1!

So!In an unusual break from the usual format of Failed-Project Friday, this time I'm going to feature a comic pitch that was, in fact, successful. Go figure! What follows is the first half of my proposal for the 2004 Marvel miniseries Livewires, though the project's initial title was Livewire, singular; you'll also notice a few other minor differences along those lines, such as Social Butterfly's original supranym (mechanym?) origi...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: Vintage ROSE sketches, drawn on the backs of G13 photocopies(?)!

As I've posted here previously (but don't care enough to track down said posts), on occasion throughout the late 90s and early 2000s I had the odd tendency of knocking out Rose & Lily DiD sketch sets on the backs of photocopies of penciled original pages from Gen13; some of 'em were random pieces done for a kind (small-P) patron who appreciated the loosely sketched stuff, but most were just trying to work up viable damsel-y poses for ...

LIFE DRAWINGS FROM PHOTOREFERENCE #179: The digital era begins, as of 2019!

Wellp, all of my analog-media sets of sketch sets from photoreference from my life drawing heyday of 2017-2018 have now been posted here, so I'm moving on to feature my earliest stabs in digital media. Yay?The first art app I tried out was MediBang Paint, but I never did any life drawing via that vaguely CSP-like software. However, while I intensely disliked almost all of MediBang's default brushes, the oddly (mis)named "pencil" b...

VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: S'more BUBBLEGUM from the days of yore!

Wellp, at least two of these Bubblegum Crisis-derived commissions should be new to (most of) you, though the last few were prrrrrobably posted here before, albeit potentially years ago.First off, Priss sporting "THAT leather jacket," which was of course photoreferenced from a friend's jacket in pics taken during, I think, the summer of '96:Priss is also sporting the extremely stylized facial structure that my evolving art style ha...

WORK STAGES on another PSM "swimsuit feature" endpage cartoon from 2005!

Behold, the Work Stages—all 2.1 or so of 'em—for another "Endpage" feature I wrote and drew for the videogame magazine PSM back in 2005.IIRC, after the magazine had stopped running its annual swimsuit feature with art by many comics artists—ah, yes, the times they were a-changing, even back in those halcyon days of the 2000s—this was yet another attempt at doing a one-page callback to the now-discarded concept, like the previo...

Preview of Friday's BIGGEST SPENDERS bonus post, plus a look at upcoming April content!

T'other day a Patron asked about seeing a preview of Friday's Exclusive Monthly Bonus Post for the Biggest Spenders and, upon further reflection, I decided to work one up, as well as address upcoming content in April for this here Patreon. So!March's Bonus Post will feature a bunch of Clip Studio Paint sketch sets based on $20 art requests, as I continue to grind my way through a bounteous backlog of art reqs:...which, this month at le...

Life drawings from photoreference: high-res scans #178

Wellp, the time arrived some time ago for single-set posts of life drawings fromrandom photoreference, as my once seemingly endless supply of sets from near-daily work in 2017 has dwindled down to a sadly diminished number. In fact, that number has now diminished to zero, as the sketch set above was the last unused image left in the ol' Life Drawing folder. After this, I'll have to switch over to more recent digital-art sets next month; af...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: Rejected commission concept of "BARBARIENNE & GOBBOS" repurposed as a CSP brush test!

So!Recently, I worked up a rough sketch concept for a commission that wound up going nowhere, so I decided to finish the piece as a Clip Studio Paint brush test... which proved educational, though almost entirely in a negative manner. The basic idea was to feature a barbarian warrior forced to dance for a troupe of goblins who had captured her:...with the punchline I worked in being that the "barbarienne" would, in fact, prefer to be a fan...

Behold, a text piece of yore that might be wildly off-base!!

Wellp, desperate times call for desperate measures as I'm running quite far behind on Patreon posts, and had to tap one of my few remaining "emergency options" for a quick post. Lordy loo!Anyhoo, above is the forward I wrote for the 2006 book Mangaka America: Manga by America's Hottest Artists by Will Staehle and Tania Del Rio (for Steelriver Studio LLC). Wellp, the time arrived some time ago for single-set posts of life drawings fromrandom photoreference, as my once seemingly endless supply of sets from near-daily work in 2017 has dwindled down to a sadly diminished number. In fact, as of this post, only 1 more unused image is left in the ol' folder, meaning that in next month I'll have to switch over to more recent digital-art sets; after those are used up, not sure what the heck I'm ...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: S'more EMPOWERED pose-ref sketch sets of yore!

Just scanned a few more Empowered rough sketch sets from roughly 10 years ago (or more, in one case) that I found in an old folder, probably drawn to generate poses for future comic stories... maybe. At one point, apparently had a story in mind in which Emp wound up trussed with straps (or bad buys' belts?) in a fairly unusual "hands-in-front" configuration. Not sure why this particular pose-generation set wound up looking so oddly fin...

FAILED PROJECT FRIDAY: Early stages of a never-pitched TMNT proposal, part 2!

[UPDATE: Re: the power outage I mentioned earlier in the week, I am happy to say that electricity was restored to my street last night after three highly unpleasant days. By unfortunate coincidence, the gas stove was out and my generator completely inaccessible, two missing items which normally make a garden-variety power outage relatively bearable. The good news? With nothing else I could work on whilst freezing my ass off, I cranked out somethin...

POWER OUTAGE

Power’s been out for two days now after a massive snowstorm. You may see an interruption in posting next week depending on how long restoration of power takes. In the meantime, I’m mainly concentrating on not freezing to death, as a few truly unfortunate circumstances have converged disastrously. Currently 44 effing degrees inside the ol’ house, which is none too optimal. Well, wherever you are, stay warmer than me, folks!
